Kayla Thorngate RDN, IBCLC
Hi, I’m Kayla! I am the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant behind Nourished Mothers. I am proud to provide nutrition and lactation consultations both in-person and virtually across the state of Colorado. I also lead Baby-Led Feeding and other nutrition workshops online.
A Little Background
We each have a story, here’s a little bit of mine and the values that inspire me to do what I do!
Becoming a Dietitian
Having experienced firsthand the positive role nutritious foods play in overall health, I made the decision to pursue nutrition in college. I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with my Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics in December of 2012. I then completed a 1,200 hour dietetic internship through the University of Northern Colorado which led me to gain experience in a variety of clinical, community, and managerial settings. Following my internship I sat for the national registration exam and earned my credentials in May of 2014. Since becoming a dietitian I have worked primarily with community nutrition programs and in private practice.
My Nutrition Philosophy
I believe that all foods can fit into a healthy diet!
Intuitive Eating is one of my core philosophies and the base of all my nutrition counseling. It entails ditching the diet mentality and taking a gentle approach to nutrition and your body, honoring your hunger, making peace with food, respecting your fullness, and building trust with yourself around food. My clients learn that food is more than fuel and being nourished comes from more than food. We are all born intuitive eaters! I work with my clients to regain what they lost from diet culture, and teach them how to protect the natural intuitive eater within their children.
My practice is built on the foundation that the health of a woman when she becomes a mother (beginning at the time of conception) can have a lifelong impact on her child’s health. I firmly believe that good health begins with how we are cared for in the womb, and good nutrition from the very beginning helps set a new life in the right direction. One of my true passions is working with women in their journey to and through motherhood, teaching them how to nourish their own bodies and those of their families. I specialize in nutrition for preconception, pregnancy and postpartum, as well as during breastfeeding. As a lactation consultant, I work with new mothers to support all areas of their breastfeeding journey.
Whether you are trying to get pregnant, are in the midst of your pregnancy, or are in the first few years after giving birth, I would love to connect with you to hear your goals and the ways I can support your nutrition and health!
